'We’d Definitely Be Considering It': Gary Stead On Kane Williamson's Inclusion In World Cup 2023 Squad

Champion New Zealand batsman Kane Williamson is not yet ruled out of the upcoming 50-over World Cup as the Kiwis are looking at every possible opportunity to blood their regular captain for the quadrennial event.

Williamson is on a comeback trial ever since he underwent a surgery on his right knee ACL, which he ruptured while fielding during the opening encounter of IPL 2023 earlier this year.

Kane will travel to the UK with the BlackCaps squad for the four-match ODI series against the reigning world champions where he will be monitored on a day-to-day basis.

New Zealand and England will open the 2023 World Cup in Ahmedabad on October 05, and according to head coach Gary Stead, the BlackCaps are even exploring the opportunity to include the veteran batsman in their squad even if it means that he won't be available for the initial part of the tournament.

"Kane’s working on a day-by-day, week-by-week process and we’ve been clear and careful with him that we don’t look too far ahead. He’s progressed as we’ve hoped and possibly even better in some cases," said Stead as quoted by ESPNCricinfo.

“But ACL injuries can be difficult, they’re different for every person. We’ll get the medical experts around Kane as much as we can to help us make that decision in three weeks. If it’s the knockout stages then that might be too late as that’s something that you may not even be there, but if it was earlier in the World Cup we’d definitely be considering it," he said.

Williamson was adjudged 'Player of the tournament' in the 2019 World Cup, and he was one of the biggest reasons why the Kiwis were able to qualify for the final, where they came up short in the most heartbreaking circumstances ever.

With this edition set to be his last 50-over World Cup, Kane is racing against time to get fully fit for the mega-event, something his fans are anxiously waiting for.
