India secured a convincing 47-run win against Afghanistan in India's first Super Eight match of the ICC T20 World Cup 2024. The World number 1 batter, Suryakumar Yadav, was awarded the Player of the Match in this game. This marks the first time in this event that an Indian batter has received the Player of the Match award.

However, Suryakumar Yadav praised Indian bowlers too after receiving the Player of the Match award.

"There is a lot of hard work and practice going behind this. I will say this again. There is a lot of routines that goes behind this. I don't mind giving this award to the bowler. But first batter to win this award and hopefully, the first of many. It is very difficult to pick him (Rashid Khan). The best bowler in the world and I try to stay inside the line. You have to adapt to the conditions here. When you go inside, you try to assess the situation and try to contribute to the team's success."

"I remember, when Hardik came in to bat, I told him that we will keep batting with the same intent. The wicket may get slower and the ball may reverse a bit. So, it's better to keep batting with the same intent," said Suryakumar Yadav after receiving player of the match award.

Batting first, India set a formidable target of 181-8 in 20 overs. The standout performer was Suryakumar Yadav, who scored his second fifty of the tournament in typical 'SKY style' — an explosive 53 off 28 balls, featuring five boundaries and three sixes.

After early setbacks with the wickets of Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, and Rishabh Pant, it was Suryakumar and Hardik Pandya who steadied the innings and powered India to a strong total.

In the bowling department, Jasprit Bumrah was the game-changer once again, taking 3 wickets while conceding just 7 runs in his 4 overs, effectively stifling Afghanistan's chase. Arshdeep Singh too continued his form in the T20 World Cup, picking 3 wickets against Afghanistan.

India will face Bangladesh on 22nd of June in second game of the Super Eight round.
