Pakistan overcame a spirited Irish unit in a tense run-chase in match number 36 of the ongoing 2024 T20 World Cup. Ace pacer, Shaheen Afridi starred with the ball, picking up three wickets during the Irish innings, including two within the opening over of the match itself.

The speedster eventually finished with figures of 3-22 from four overs, and was fittingly declared ‘Player of the Match’ shortly after hitting the winning runs in the penultimate over of the contest.

After the match, Shaheen Afridi revealed how he assessed the playing conditions, and reflected Pakistan’s disastrous 2024 T20 World Cup campaign where they lost to USA and India to crash out of the tournament’s race.

Shaheen Afridi admits Pakistan’s shortcomings

While speaking during the post-match presentation ceremony, Shaheen Afridi said that the conditions at Lauderhill assisted the new ball and he accordingly bowled fuller to get wickets. The cricketer, who launched the match-winning six in the penultimate over of the chase, added that it his job to smack big hits with the bat.

“Yeah, I think the wicket was supporting the new ball and we tried to hit the right areas and pick early wickets. I try to bowl fuller. Everyone is different. Everyone go with their strengths. But at the end of the day, that finish is good. That's my job (on batting). I come in late in the innings. I try to do what the team needs and I always try to hit sixes.”

Shaheen Afridi also admitted that the Pakistan team has not lived up to their expectations, and they will be aiming to improve “certain areas” in time for next year’s 2025 Champions Trophy at home. He added:

“We haven't played good cricket that our country demands. We have improved on certain areas with the Champions Trophy coming in.”

After going wicketless against USA, Shaheen Afridi picked up a wicket each against India and Canada before claiming a match-winning three-fer against Ireland.
