Bangladesh number five Towhid Hridoy failed to rescue his team from their unwavering start against Nepal in match number 37 of the ongoing 2024 T20 World Cup at St Vincent. The cricketer struck a couple of confident boundaries early in the innings, after he had arrived to the crease following the dismissal of opening batter Litton Das.

Hridoy’s entrapment courtesy of Nepal captain Rohit Paudel and comeback man Sandeep Lamichhane reduced Bangladesh to 30-4 in 5.4 overs.

Towhid Hridoy’s failed sweep costs Bangladesh dearly

Towhid Hridoy arrived to the crease in the fifth over of the innings following the dismissal of Litton Das at 21-3. In a bid to lead his side to an aggressive recovery, the right-handed batter got off the mark on his first ball with a boundary against Sompal Kami, and flogged Nepal skipper Rohit Paudel with another valuable four runs behind square in the following over.

Attempting to sustain Bangladesh’s newfound scoring charge in the opening powerplay overs, Towhid Hridoy miscued a sweep off Paudel, safely pouched by Nepal cricketer Sandeep Lamichhane at short fine leg. Hridoy’s dismissal further worsened Bangladesh’s troubles at 30-4.

Prior to the match, Nepal skipper Rohit Paudel won the toss and opted to field first. Bangladesh lost their opening wicket off the first ball of the match, courtesy of a sharp caught-and-bowled from Sompal Kami. Litton Das, captain Najmul Hossain Shanto, senior man Shakib Al Hasan and middle-order batters Towhid Hridoy and Mahmudullah all failed to recover from early setback as Bangladesh crumbled their way to 57-5 at the halfway stage of the innings.

The match marks the penultimate Group D fixture, and the 37th overall of the tournament.
