In the aftermath of India's 32-run defeat against Sri Lanka at the R. Premadasa Stadium in Colombo, Indian captain Rohit Sharma shared his thoughts on the team's performance and his approach to the game.

Despite a solid start by the Indian openers, the team could not capitalise on it and succumbed to a dramatic collapse, culminating in a total of 208 all out while chasing a modest target of 241.

Rohit reflects on India's batting strategy

Rohit and Shubman Gill provided a promising 97-run opening stand, but the dismissal of the openers led to a quick downfall, with India losing key wickets in rapid succession.

Speaking to the broadcasters in the post-match presentation, Rohit Sharma highlighted the need for consistency in their gameplay.

"When you lose a game, everything hurts. It’s not about the death overs. We need to play consistent cricket, and we failed to do that today," he stated, expressing his disappointment over the defeat.

The Indian skipper also praised the Sri Lankan team, particularly Jefferey Vandersay, who played a crucial role in derailing the Indian batting lineup.

"You gotta adapt to what's in front of you. With a left-right combination, we felt it would be slightly easier to rotate the strike, but it didn’t happen. Credit to Jeffrey and Sri Lanka; they played better than us and ended up on the winning side," Rohit added.

Discussing his own dismissal and batting approach, Rohit remained unapologetic about the risks he took at the crease.

"Not really disappointed with my dismissal. The reason I got runs was the way I batted. Risks are bound to be taken, and that is how I want to bat. Whenever you get out, it doesn’t matter the score; you always feel disappointed when you don’t cross the line. I don’t want to compromise my intent. It’s helping me and the team to a certain extent," he explained.

Rohit also highlighted the challenges posed by the pitch and the game conditions, noting the difficulty in scoring during the middle overs. The Indian skipper concluded with a forward-looking statement.

"We have played well in the past, so I don’t want to look too much into how we played today, but there will certainly be a talk about how to bat in the middle overs,” concluded Rohit.

Meanwhile, with India trailing the series 0-1, the Men in Blue must win the upcoming third ODI on Wednesday, August 7 to level the series and avoid a defeat.
