'We Didn't Bat Well..,' Rovman Powell Reflects On Heartbreaking T20 WC Defeat vs SA

After his team was knocked out of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024 following a defeat in their final Super 8 match against South Africa, West Indies skipper Rovman Powell lamented their poor batting performance, especially during the middle overs.

Reflecting on the defeat, Powell noted that losing wickets in clusters crippled the batting lineup.

"As a batting group, this is a performance we want to forget. We didn't bat well in the middle overs, and losing wickets in clusters always breaks the back of the batting team," Powell said.

"It was a commendable effort; the boys believed they could defend 135. We haven't won the World Cup or reached the semifinal, but we have played some good cricket in the last 12 months," he added.

The Windies' powerful batting lineup struggled, managing only 135/8 in their 20 overs. Marco Jansen dismissed the in-form Shai Hope for a golden duck in the opening over, and skipper Aiden Markram removed the dangerous Nicholas Pooran in the next over for just 1, putting the two-time World Cup winners on the back foot.

Kyle Mayers and Roston Chase steadied the innings with an 81-run partnership for the third wicket. However, from 86/2, the West Indies collapsed, losing wickets at regular intervals.

Apart from Mayers and Chase, only Andre Russell and Alzarri Joseph reached double figures, with Russell being run out in an unfortunate turn of events due to a direct hit from Anrich Nortje.

The Proteas had a shaky start in response but eventually reached the revised 123-run target (124/7), knocking the West Indies out of the tournament and securing their spot in the semi-finals.
