Afghanistan stunned the cricketing world by defeating the reigning ODI and Test World champions Australia at Kingstown, St Vincent, to remain in contention for the semi-finals.

After their team recorded its biggest ever win in international cricket, an elated Rashid Khan said his team was confident in defending the total they set at the halfway mark.

Afghanistan faced a critical must-win match in the tournament and they were determined to perform well.

The Afghan openers Rahmanullah Gurbaz and Ibrahim Zadran navigated a challenging pitch, starting with a solid partnership of 118 runs. This set the stage for a competitive total of 148, well-suited to Afghanistan's bowling strengths.

In the powerplay, Naveen-ul-Haq struck early with two key wickets, momentarily swinging the momentum.

However, Glenn Maxwell threatened to turn the tide until Gulbadin Naib intervened with a match-changing spell of 4/20, decisively shifting the game in Afghanistan's favor. While talking about the majestic victory over the Aussies, Rashid Khan said:

“I think I can sleep better now. But that was a night which didn't let me sleep. The game kept coming into my mind,” Rashid said at the post-match media conference.

“Definitely, I didn't sleep the whole night (on November 7, 2023) and I feel like tonight because of the happiness, I won't be able to sleep. That's how happy the whole team is,” Rashid said.

“It's a massive win for us as a team, as a nation. It's not just like a bilateral game. It's a World Cup game, and definitely in a World Cup, you're beating the best side. It's a great achievement. And you're (Australia) the winners of the 2021 World Cup. “So, beating a team like that, I think it always gives you so much energy and doesn't let you sleep as well,” he added.

Gurbaz and Gulbadin's contributions overshadowed the efforts of Maxwell and Cummins as Afghanistan secured one of their most memorable victories.
