'We Decided To...,' Sourav Ganguly Reveals Why DC Dropped Prithvi Shaw Vs PBKS

When an uncapped Ricky Bhui was picked ahead of Prithvi Shaw in Delhi Capitals' playing XI for the IPL 2024 game against Punjab Kings, questions were raised about why a player who had represented India was dropped.

Delhi Capitals (DC) director of cricket, Sourav Ganguly, has provided the reason behind that decision, saying it was more about opening with Mitchell Marsh and David Warner.

Shaw struggled during the IPL 2023, failing to make any impact despite being given a long run. In eight matches last year, he only scored 106 runs, 54 of which came in a single game.

He was rightfully dropped from the playing XI midway through the tournament, with Phil Salt taking over the opening position.

After making a return to cricket in the Ranji Trophy for Mumbai, Shaw couldn't live upto the expectations as he scored just one century and a half-century in nine innings.

Although Shaw's recent form hasn't been impressive, his absence from DC's starting XI for their IPL 2024 opener raised eyebrows. Ganguly explained the decision, stating,

“Prithvi Shaw is an opener. We decided to open with Marsh and Warner, and Ricky Bhui is a middle-order batter. So they bat at different positions. So it's not Bhui for sure. It's a different opening combination, they opened for Australia, and they have done well together. So we decided to do that.”

Warner and Marsh's opening partnership provided a strong start for DC against PBKS, with both players aggressively attacking the opposition's bowling.

Given the team's decision to persist with this combination, the Australian duo will have an extended opportunity to prove their worth.

Following a loss in their opening game against PBKS, DC will face Rajasthan Royals in their second group-stage match in Jaipur tonight.
