Delhi Capitals (DC) dropped a shock bomb in their very first game of the IPL 2024 by leaving out their popular Indian opener Prithvi Shaw ahead of the face-off against Punjab Kings (PBKS) on Saturday (March 22). 

On his return to the helm, DC captain Rishabh Pant confirmed Shaw has been left out of the playing XI and not even named in the franchise's potential 'Impact Player' choices for the bout against their Punjabi counterparts at the new Mullanpur Stadium. 

It would've came in as a huge setback for Shaw, who made a return to competitive cricket via the Ranji Trophy for Mumbai following a prolonged injury rehab but seemed to have paid for his substandard showings in the past two edition of the toughest T20 league. 


DC Leave Out Prithvi Shaw For IPL 2024 Opener 

Expected to retain his opening slot and continue his extravagant top-order pairing with the experienced David Warner, Shaw found himself on the bench for the season's first game against Punjab after a string of low scores in his previous outings for the Delhi franchise. 

Shaw had been dropped twice from the side during IPL 2023 as he averaged a woeful 13.25 and endured a dip in his strike-rate to 124.71 with just 106 runs made in eight innings, becoming one of the reasons why Delhi couldn't make it past the league stage. 

The young right-hander could still make a comeback into reckoning but Netizens wondered if this was a sign of DC team management running out of patience with their faltering opener and that Shaw might consider leaving the team altogether ahead of next year's mega auction. 












Shaw's consistency has been a perennial problem in his IPL career as even though the swashbuckling cricketer has gone at a terrific strike-rate of 145.97 over 71 matches, he averages just 23.86 in his role.
