KL Rahul felt his "heart is racing" as he returned to the Ekana Stadium in Lucknow for India's next league match of the ICC World Cup 2023, a venue which instilled mixed feelings in the mind of the veteran Indian middle-order batter.

Rahul, who has enjoyed the great fanfare and support by the passionate crowds that turn up in support of his Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) side in the Indian Premier League (IPL), also suffered a career-threatening quadriceps injury at the venue earlier this year.

Playing the return fixture against Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) on May 1st in IPL 2023, the Lucknow skipper tore his hamstring while going for a save at the edge of the boundary ropes and limped off the field in excruciating pain, not to return to playing action until six months later at the Asia Cup 2023 in Sri Lanka.

Dropped from the Test and T20I sides, Rahul had to save his spot in the One-Day side but was required to undergo surgery to be fit for the World Cup and keep other middle-order hopefuls at bay. The cricketer worked extensively hard in a difficult period and has since emerged as an even stronger personality on and off the field.

But the strain he had to endure still stays with the committed Indian cricketer, who felt anxious initially as he returned to the very ground that gave him a huge setback and threw him to the wolves until he came back leading the pack.

Speaking in a special interview for BCCI.tv, Rahul said the bitter memory of finding himself out of the game for a long-drawn phase and undergoing surgery came back immediately as he graced the field for the practice session on the eve of the England game.

"I entered the ground today, I had to do some running and I told Rajini sir who is my trainer that my heart is racing because the last time I was here I had not such a great experience. It was a bittersweet (return in that sense)."

"Also the ones (moments) that happen at the very end tend to stay with us for a lot longer and have a bigger impact on us. And that injury obviously had a huge impact on me and my career. It wasn't such a happy moment for me and my family," he added.
