'Who Is All-Time Great In ODIs, Sachin Or Virat?' - Ex-England Skipper Answers

Nasser Hussain came up with amusing remarks amidst the constant debate on who among Master Blaster Sachin Tendulkar and his legacy successor Virat Kohli is the stronger contender for the all-time great's tag in One-Day Internationals.

The former England captain, who watched Tendulkar dominate world cricket in his playing days and is now one of the leading voices behind the mic to narrate Kohli's prolific ways, gave a balanced answer to the brewing question on who among the two is the greater ODI batter?

While Tendulkar remains the numero uno run-getter in One-Day Internationals with 18,426 runs in 463 ODIs at an average of 44.83 and a strike-rate of 86.23, Kohli is closing in ever so quickly to the maestro with his tally of 13,437 runs in 286 ODI matches while averaging 58.17 and retaining a strike-rate of 93.70.

Batting conditions have gone off the charts in One-Day cricket over the past decade at the height of Kohli's career, making it easier for the bat to dictate terms to the ball, unlike Tendulkar's heyday. But Kohli's magnificent rise into cricketing dominance has emboldened the discussions and comparisons he has evoked with his idol.

Tendulkar or Kohli? Hussain Makes Interesting Choice

Despite storming past records, Kohli might find it difficult to match Tendulkar's overall tally given the insignificant number of ODIs played now in what is realistically the twilight of his illustrious career. But one of Indian cricket's strongest assets is peerlessly close to surpassing the legend on the century count.

While Tendulkar smashed 49 hundreds in One-Day cricket in a remarkable career that saw the master rally his way to 100 international tons, Kohli stands two centuries short of going past his inspiration, a landmark he could well achieve at the ongoing ICC World Cup 2023.

Speaking at the sidelines of the marquee tournament in India, Hussain funnily said he would save himself from the wrath of Sachin and Kohli fans by choosing both in the all-time great debates. Hussain said he would pick Tendulkar to bat first and Kohli as the chase master when asked who among the two is the greater player.

Hussain made his remarks in an interactive exercise for host broadcaster Star Sports having enjoyed both the Indian legends unveil their expertise with the bat over the past three decades at the international stage.
