The New Zealand skipper Kane Williamson made an impressive return to international cricket after notching up a match-defining fifty against Pakistan in the first warm-up fixture on September 29.

Following his unfortunate ACL injury that he suffered at the start of the 2023 IPL season, concerns began to mount about Kane’s participation in the marquee event. However, the 33-year-old put all those speculations to rest after playing an innings of substance which allowed the Blackcaps to chase an imposing target with ease.

Kane’s sublime fifty has given the Blackcaps a much-needed boost as they look to head into the World Cup. Following New Zealand’s clinical run chase, Kane expressed his pleasure in being involved in the thick of things. He also spoke further about his knee which seems to be holding up pretty well.

"Just great to get through some batting out in the middle and be part of a match, which was really nice and it [knee] held up pretty well. It needed a little bit of icing afterwards but it's all part of the process."

"Yeah, it wasn't a reality certainly five months ago and [I've] been quite fortunate with some of that recovery and to be named in the squad is really exciting for me and just really looking forward to getting out there again. It was nice to do that today."

The Kiwi skipper also admitted he was nowhere close to making it to the ODI World Cup squad 5 months ago when he was still trying to recuperate from the injury. But fortunately for him, his recovery came in a timely manner at a time when New Zealand desperately required to leverage his caliber and expertise to make early inroads into the tournament.

New Zealand are poised to play their second warm-up fixture against the Proteas on October 2 where the Kiwi skipper aims to take a larger part in that contest.
