India’s captain and one of modern cricket’s finest batters, Rohit Sharma has guided his team to the semi-finals of the Champions Trophy. But not too long ago, the tables had turned on him.
The veteran opener made history for all the wrong reasons when he dropped himself from the last Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, a move unheard of in Indian cricket.
Social media erupted. Some called it a selfless act, others dismissed it as a mere ‘PR stunt.’ But now, Rohit’s former teammate Amit Mishra has come forward to put an end to all the speculation.
'Not A PR Activity' Says Amit Mishra
Speaking to Lallantop, Mishra made it crystal clear that Rohit Sharma’s decision to sit out wasn’t a publicity gimmick.
"It wasn't a PR activity; this is what I personally feel. His nature is not like that. I know him personally. He is not that kind of a player who will do such a thing for his PR," Mishra stated as he shot down the critics with authority.
Retirement Is Rohit’s Call
Another hot topic that refuses to die down is Rohit Sharma’s future in international cricket. With questions swirling about his retirement, Mishra once again provided clarity.
"So, I personally feel that it should be his decision. The day he feels that he can't play anymore, he will retire himself. Rohit's wish has nothing to do with the selectors. Don't select him. That's the selectors' choice. Retirement is Rohit's call," Mishra said.
Backing Rohit To Bounce Back
Test cricket hasn’t been kind to Rohit Sharma lately, but Amit Mishra believes it’s only a matter of time before he turns the tables.
"You tell me, who is better than him at the moment? In Test cricket, can anyone handle pressure like him? Although he is struggling, name one player who can handle that pressure," Mishra challenged.
The former leg-spinner made a solid point. India has a wealth of young talent but when it comes to handling the heat of Test cricket, few can match Rohit’s experience and temperament.
Name One Captain Who Has Done This
Perhaps the most striking statement from Mishra came when he highlighted just how rare Rohit’s decision to step aside was.
"Definitely, you back the young players, and that's what he has done. Name one captain who decided to drop himself in Australia."
It’s a question that should make even the harshest critics rethink their stance. Captains are known to back themselves through thick and thin. But Rohit took the harder route. He stepped aside for the team’s benefit, something not many skippers would even consider.
