Rohit Sharma has been struggling with form [Source: AP]
After securing an emphatic 295-run victory in Perth, team India fell flat in the subsequent affair in Adelaide, as Australia restored parity in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy with a much-needed ten-wicket victory. While the Indian bowlers, apart from Jasprit Bumrah, disappointed the visitors, their captain Rohit Sharma received massive backlash for his poor batting and questionable on-field tactics.
Despite returning to the playing XI for the second Test, Rohit Sharma couldn't make an impact in the game, letting his troops down with two consecutive poor performances. As the skipper continues to struggle, here are three reasons why he must consider retiring from Tests after the BGT 2024.
Why Should Rohit Sharma Retire From Tests After BGT 2024?
Rohit's Recent Horrible Form In Tests
- Rohit Sharma had a decent start to the year in Test cricket, performing impressively in the England home series. However, the second half of 2024 has been completely disastrous for the Mumbaikar, as he has found it incredibly tough to get runs under his belt.
- In his last 12 Test innings, Rohit has managed only 142 runs at a miserable average of 11.83. While the fast bowlers have exploited his technical woes around the off stump, the Indian captain hasn't picked the cues to stay proactive as a batter in the middle.
- Furthermore, his knack for throwing away his starts has emerged as a massive concern for team India, considering the importance of his role in the team.
Rohit Should Focus On ODIs After Current WTC Cycle
- Rohit has already retired from T20Is and currently plays in the longer formats. However, after the current WTC cycle, there needs to be more logic behind him continuing as India's Test captain. He has been struggling with form and fitness, and given that the next WTC cycle spans two years, India would happily take his retirement to conduct a smooth transition.
- His Test retirement will allow Rohit to focus on ODI cricket, which has been his forte over the years. With the Champions Trophy on the horizon, India would want him to devote more time to ODI preparations after the BGT ends.
India Has No Dearth Of Talent
- Considering how Rohit has performed in Tests of late, it makes little sense for him to claim a position in the Indian team, with several deserving players waiting in the wings.
- India have a solid talent pool consisting of youngsters like Dhruv Jurel, Sarfaraz Khan, Sai Sudharsan. Also, given that KL Rahul and Yashasvi Jaiswal have pretty much established themselves as the first-choice openers, it's the perfect time for Rohit to leave and hand over the reins to India's youth.
