Virat Kohli's surprising retirement from Test cricket on May 12th marked the end of an era for the red-ball format, concluding a career that profoundly impacted the sport globally. Reacting to his close friend and former RCB teammate's decision, South African great AB de Villiers described it as a deeply personal choice made by a player who dedicated everything to the game.

De Villiers Says 'Gut Feeling' Is The Cause

De Villiers acknowledged Kohli's immense contributions while expressing relief fans would still see him play other formats.

"He must have listened to his heart. He followed his gut feeling. He has done a lot for cricket around the world over the years, and luckily, we will still see him on the cricket field," De Villiers said, as quoted by ANI.

Kohli's decision, despite his consistent performances and renowned passion, aggression, and work ethic, leaves a significant void in Test cricket. De Villiers, who shared many memorable moments with Kohli at RCB and on the international stage, conceded his absence would be felt.

"He will be missed in Test matches. He leaves a great legacy in the red ball," de Villiers said paying tribute to Kohli's impact in the longest format.

The Legacy of Kohli Awaits To Be Rewritten

Kohli departs as one of the modern era's definitive Test cricketers, both as a dominant batter and an inspirational leader. However, his legacy continues in ODIs and also in IPL, one of the most renowned leagues in the world.

Notably, this season, Kohli has managed to bag 614 runs in 14 innings at an impressive average of 55.82. As RCB have stormed into the Finals, they await Qualifier 2's results and a braced heart on their way to book their maiden IPL title. Notably, AB de Villiers will also be present in the stands of Narendra Modi Stadium on June 3 to witness the mega clash and cheer for his ex-team RCB.
