Mumbai opener Rohit Sharma silenced doubters with a match-winning 81 off just 50 balls, propelling the Mumbai Indians to a vital victory over the Gujarat Titans in Friday's IPL 2025 Eliminator in Mullanpur.
The 38-year-old, whose season had been inconsistent, delivered under intense pressure in the do-or-die clash, however, he rued the missed opportunity to score more fifties for the season.
Rohit Sharma Reflects On His Season So Far
Reflecting on his overall 2025 season during the post-match presentation, Sharma acknowledged room for improvement.
"I have got only four fifties and I definitely would've liked to get more. Today was a good day for us as a team. I do understand the importance of playing this Eliminator going through this and taking the next step forward. We are really proud of this performance," said Rohit Sharma in the post-match presentation.
The Mumbai skipper's innings was not without fortune. He received two significant reprieves inside the powerplay, with Gerald Coetzee dropping a straightforward chance off Prasidh Krishna and wicketkeeper Kusal Mendis spilling another opportunity off Mohammed Siraj. Sharma candidly admitted the role Luck played.
"To be honest, I have played all those shots in the game before and unfortunately, I have found fielders. Somewhere down the line, you got to be lucky. Today was the day for me. Those catches got dropped. But again, as I said, even after that, you need to keep the momentum going and score runs for your team. It was brilliant from our entire batting line-up to post that score on the board," Sharma added.
Rohit Sharma's Heroics Lead Mumbai to Qualifier 2
This crucial knock marked a significant turnaround for Rohit Sharma, who endured an underwhelming start to the IPL 2025 season before finding form with an unbeaten 76 against the Chennai Super Kings earlier in the campaign. Notably, Rohit also became the first player to hit 300 sixes in IPL after the Eliminator.
With that being said, Mumbai now find themselves against Punjab Kings in Qualifier 2. Punjab after being defeated by RCB will seek a win in the do-or-die clash for the Final. Both the teams will meet on June 1 at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.
