Former Indian captain Sourav Ganguly has backed Virat Kohli amidst the latter’s lack of form at the ongoing 2024 T20 World Cup in the West Indies. In his seven batting appearances so far in the tournament, Kohli has managed to tally just 75 runs at a dismal average of 10.71, with two ducks and three additional single-digit scores to his name.

Ganguly believes that the legendary Indian batter should continue to open the innings for his country alongside captain Rohit Sharma when they will take on South Africa in the finals on June 29 at Bridgetown.

Ganguly wants Virat Kohli to open the innings in final

With just 75 runs to his name in seven innings, Virat Kohli is currently going through one of his worst phases as a T20I batter. Moreover, the ongoing 2024 T20 World Cup also statistically marks his worst tournament outing, considering the legendary Indian batter has emerged as his team’s primary run-scorer in the preceding editions.

Despite Virat Kohli’s apparent struggles with the bat as an opener, Sourav Ganguly believes the 35-year-old should continue to open the innings alongside captain Rohit Sharma in the final on June 29. As quoted by the PTI, Ganguly cited Kohli’s prolific 2023 ODI World Cup record and claimed that a couple of bad matches will not tarnish the cricketer’s legendary status quo. He said:

“Virat should continue to open. He just had a World Cup of 700 runs seven months ago. He is human. Sometimes, he will also fail, and you have to accept it. People like Kohli, (Sachin) Tendulkar, (Rahul) Dravid, they are institutions for Indian cricket. Three-four matches don't make them weaker players. Don't rule him out in the final tomorrow.”

Even in the semifinal against defending champions England, Virat Kohli was cleaned up by Reece Topley for just nine at Guyana.

Regardless, Kohli and the rest of his teammates are currently in Bridgetown for the 2024 T20 World Cup title against first-time finalists South Africa.
