Rohit Sharma led Team India to a comprehensive 68-run win over England in the second semifinal of the 2024 T20 World Cup. The ‘Men in Blue’ will now face an unbeaten South African unit for the title clash at Bridgetown on June 29.

Remarkably, India’s win against defending champions England in the semifinal helped captain Sharma scale a significant T20I world record, helping him soar past Babar Azam’s landmark tally.

Rohit Sharma becomes T20Is most successful skipper

Rohit Sharma, who first led Team India in T20Is back in 2017 and was appointed full-time skipper in late-2021, went past Pakistan’s Babar Azam to become the most successful captain in format’s history. Under his leadership, the Indian team ravaged defending champions England in the semifinal of the 2024 T20 World Cup. The outcome also marked India’s 49th win under the captaincy of Rohit Sharma.

Interestingly, it took Sharma just 61 matches to record 49 wins for Team India in T20Is. Meanwhile, Babar Azam registered 48 wins for Pakistan in 85 matches, holding a win percentage of 56.47 in comparison to Sharma’s staggering 78.68 percent.

The Indian captain contributed in his team’s 68-run win over England with a whirlwind 57-run knock from just 39 balls. Through the course of his innings, the dashing opening batter also became only the fifth cricketer to complete 5,000 runs as Indian skipper. Rohit Sharma now holds 5,033 runs under his belt across all formats while leading Team India. He joined the likes of Virat Kohli (12,883 runs), MS Dhoni (11,207 runs), Mohammad Azharuddin (8,095 runs) and Sourav Ganguly (7,643 runs) in an illustrious list.

Rohit Sharma will now lead Team India in the final of the 2024 T20 World Cup on June 29. A win over South Africa in the title clash will not only make Sharma only the second Indian skipper to lift the T20 World title after MS Dhoni (2007), but will also extend his tally to 50 T20I wins to become the first international captain to breach the landmark figure.
