Mohammed Siraj and Jasprit Bumrah orchestrated South Africa’s unwanted batting downfall on Day 1 of the second Test of their two-match Test series at Cape Town. While Siraj registered his career-best Test figures of 6-15, Jasprit Bumrah struck twice in his spell to envelop hosts South Africa for just 55 inside the opening session of the day.

Only two Proteas batters managed to tally double-digit scores in the innings, with Kyle Verreynne’s mere 15 turning out to be the biggest benefactor of South Africa’s sorry-looking scorecard.

As it turned out, South Africa attained a significant new low in Test cricket owing to their dismal batting performance against India’s raging pace attack.

Gone in a Session: South Africa achieve unwanted record

South Africa folded up for just 55 in 23.2 overs within the opening session of Day 1 against India to record their lowest-ever Test total since their readmission to cricket in 1991.

They eclipsed their previous lowest total of 73 from the 2018 Galle Test against Sri Lanka by 18 runs, albeit this time in front of their home crowd against a struggling Indian unit. After South Africa’s latest batting collapse, here is a look at five of their lowest totals in Test cricket since their readmission into the sport.

Furthermore, South Africa’s 55-run effort was also the third-lowest total ever recorded at Cape Town in Test cricket. Back in 2013, South Africa folded up New Zealand for just 45 at the venue, which continues to remain the worst-collective batting performance here by any team. The Proteas also demolished Zimbabwe for 54 back in 2005 at the Newlands Cricket Ground.

In the meantime, South Africa struck back with precision to remove young Indian opener Yashasvi Jaiswal for a duck. However, visiting skipper Rohit Sharma ensured that Team India maintained their early advantage over the hosts through his belligerent ball-striking.
