Virat Kohli deserved a proper farewell from Test cricket, at least according to former Indian all-rounder, ex-coach and prominent commentator Ravi Shastri. Celebrating Kohli’s storied legacy in Test cricket and his captaincy during India’s tough tour of England back in 2021, Shastri can be seen getting candid in a short commercial for a television special.

The former Indian coach even claimed that he would have re-appointed Virat Kohli as Test captain after India’s nightmare Border-Gavaskar Trophy tour of Australia earlier this year.

On June 11, SonyLiv released a 30-second commercial on social media for a television special tilted “Bharat Tum Chale Chalo, Kahani 21-22 ki”. As the current Indian team prepares for a tough five-match Test tour of England later this month, the show will narrate the inside stories from India’s previous red-ball tour of England from 2022.

Commentator Ravi Shastri, who was India’s head coach back in 2022 and worked alongside captain Virat Kohli, stated that he is saddened by the manner in which the modern-day batting great made his exit from Test cricket last month. Shastri praised Kohli for his contribution towards Test cricket, and claimed that he would have re-appointed the legendary batter as Indian captain after the team suffered a 1-3 thrashing in Australia earlier this year.

In a video shared by SonyLiv on social media, Ravi Shastri said:

“When you go, that’s when people realize how big a player he was. I feel sad that he is gone, the way he is gone. I think it could have been handled better, there should have been more communication. If I had anything to do with it, I would have made him captain, straightaway after Australia.”

Virat Kohli concluded his Test career last month after aggregating 9,230 runs from 123 Tests. The legendary Indian batter retired with an average of 46.85, however, the same average once ranged around the 52-run mark up until a few years ago.
