It turned out to be another scintillating day of cricket at the Oval in the fifth Test between England and India, where the pendulum shifted again. On the back of an excellent batting effort, India were able to post 396 runs on the board, giving England a target of 374 in the end.
Here, we take a look at how it panned out on Day 3 of the fifth Test between England and India at the Kennington Oval in London on Saturday, August 2nd.
Akash Deep Stuns England With Scincillaing Knock Before Jaiswal's Blazing Ton
India began the day 3 on a score of 75 for 2 as overnight batters Yashasvi Jaiswal and night watchman Akash Deep went out and frustrated England with their exceptional partnership. Akash smacked 66 off 94 deliveries with 12 boundaries, stitching an outstanding partnership alongside Yashasvi Jaiswal for 107 runs for the third wicket as India lost their third wicket on 177.
Following Akash's departure, skipper Shubman Gill got out for 11, while Karun Nair could only muster 17. Later, Jaiswal, who was magnificent with the bat as well as lucky, getting three chances, scored a wonderful 118.
Later, Ravindra Jadeja played another responsible 53-run knock, while Dhruv Jurel scored a decent 34. India were nine down for 357 when Washington Sundar decided to charge against the English bowlers, smashing boundaries after boundaries, with a total of four fours and four sixes.
Sundar scored a 32-ball half-century and, in the end, scored 53 off 46 deliveries, helping India post 396 runs on the board and before getting all out in 88 overs, as they challenged England with a target of 374. Pacer Josh Tongue was a pick of the bowlers with five wickets to his name, while Gus Atkinson and Jamie Overton picked three and two wickets, respectively.
England Gain Momentum With Another Solid Opening Stand Before Siraj Breaks Partnership
In the final innings, English batters Zak Crawley and Ben Duckett decided to take on the opposition as they stitched another 50-run partnership for the opening wicket.
With the last over remaining in the day, England again decided to waste some time, but only to be met with disappointment this time, as on the penultimate ball of the day, Mohammed Siraj knocked over Crawley with a brilliant yorker, ending his stay on the crease for just 14.
After Crawley's dismissal, stumps were immediately declared as England had 50 runs on the board for the loss of one wicket after 13.5 overs, with 324 still required for victory, with Duckett still at the crease, after scoring 34 off 48 deliveries.
