India’s Test captain Shubman Gill may have missed breaking one of the biggest records in Indian Test cricket history, but he walked away with something even more special, a heartfelt gift from the legend himself, Sunil Gavaskar.

In the ongoing five-match Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy against England, Gill finished with a stunning 754 runs from 10 innings. He fell just 21 runs short of Gavaskar’s long-standing record of 774 runs, the most by an Indian in a Test series.

Sunil Gavaskar Honours Shubman Gill For Record Numbers

After the match at the Oval, former legend Sunil Gavaskar, who was part of the broadcast team, personally walked up to Shubman Gill and presented him with a signed cap and shirt, a rare gift the former India captain said he gives only to a very select few.

Gavaskar said that he anticipated Gill to break his record and hence got a couple of souvenirs. The gesture from Gavaskar left Gill emotional and smiling, symbolising the passing of the torch from one great Indian opener to another.

"I have got a gift for you in anticipation of you going past (me). At least you got something to aim for in the next series. It is just a little gift. It is a shirt with SG initials, someone made it for me, I am giving this to you, but I don't know if it will fit you. This is a cap which I give to very few people with my signature. All the best," Gavaskar said in a video posted on Sony Sports' Instagram.

Interestingly, the former cricketer also mentioned he would be wearing his lucky jacket on Day 4 of the fifth Test, the same one he wore during India’s iconic win at the Gabba in 2021, when Gill played a crucial knock of 91.

"That last over was fantastic. Sending a fielder over there, but then bowling the yorker. Tomorrow I am going to wear my lucky jacket, which I wore in Australia, the white one during the Gabba Test, on the last day," he added.

Gill Did Get Past Gavaskar’s Record As Captain

Though Shubman Gill couldn't cross Sunil Gavaskar’s 774-run milestone due to a rare failure in the final Test (21 and 11), he still created history. His 754 runs are now the most ever by an Indian Test captain in a single series, breaking Gavaskar’s previous record of 732 runs set in 1978/79.

He also completed 6000 runs in international cricket at just 25 years of age, with several records tumbling throughout the 5-game series.
