The controversy surrounding India's Asia Cup 2025 trophy handover is far from over. The BCCI has officially decided to raise the matter at the upcoming ICC meeting in Dubai, after the Asian Cricket Council failed to respond to India's formal complaint.
The drama began after India refused to accept the trophy from Mohsin Naqvi, the ACC Chairman and Pakistan's Interior Minister.
India made its stance clear that it would not receive the trophy from a Pakistani government official amid ongoing political tensions between the two countries.
The situation escalated when an official removed the trophy from the stage and carried it away without explanation.
BCCI to approach ICC as India awaits Asia Cup trophy
BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia has now confirmed that the board had written to the ACC ten days ago regarding the chaos that unfolded after India's Asia Cup triumph, but received no reply.
"We have approached ACC and we have sent a letter 10 days ago. There is no positive response. We are maintaining the same stand. Therefore, we will raise the issue at the ICC meeting, which begins on November 4 in Dubai. The trophy will come, and that is for certain, because this trophy has been won by India hands down. Only the timeline has to be fixed," Saikia told ANI.
Saikia reiterated that India's stand remains unchanged, as they won't accept the trophy from Mohsin Naqvi or any other Pakistani national.
"If we had to take it from him, then we would have taken it on that day of the final. Our stance is evident: we are not accepting it from that gentleman. So, there is no change of stand on the part of BCCI. We are not accepting the trophy from the ACC Chairman, who is the Interior Minister of Pakistan. Therefore, it has to come but not from his hands," he added.
Mohsin Naqvi will return the Asia Cup trophy on this condition
ACC chief Mohsin Naqvi, who took the Asia Cup 2025 trophy to his hotel after India refused to accept it from him, was reportedly willing to hand it over, but with one condition.
According to reports, Naqvi wants a formal ceremony where he can personally present the trophy and medals to Suryakumar Yadav's team.
However, given the strained political ties between India and Pakistan, such an event appears highly unlikely. BCCI has strongly criticised Naqvi's actions.
