Jasprit Bumrah, despite picking up two wickets for just 26 runs in the 2nd T20I vs Australia at MCG, has come under scrutiny. Former India batter Robin Uthappa made a bold observation about the speedster’s approach under pressure.

Bumrah, who had rested from the ODI series, made a comeback in the T20I series. With only 125 runs to defend at Melbourne Cricket Ground, he dismissed Mitchell Owen and Matthew Short in his 4-over spell.

Robin Uthappa senses desperation in Bumrah’s bowling

As India went down for a 4-wicket loss, former Indian cricketer Robin Uthappa made a strange observation about Jasprit Bumrah.

He claimed Bumrah tends to lose his rhythm when he gets too desperate to take wickets. Australia’s batters took full advantage of those loose deliveries, keeping the chase comfortable and sealing the win with ease.

“I have observed that whenever Bumrah gets desperate to pick up wickets, he becomes slightly wayward, and when he is disciplined and hits a good line and length, he mostly picks up wickets. Australia took full advantage of that waywardness at the start, the way we started with the ball in the second innings,” Uthappa said on Star Sports.

The former cricketer pointed out that India’s bowling plan went off track early in the innings, right after they were bowled out for just 125 runs.

“When we were bowling after scoring 125, the start was very important. If we had picked up two or three wickets in the first three or four overs, the game could have been closer because we have quality spinners in the middle overs. I felt we were probably trying too hard to pick up wickets. So we got a little wayward,”  he added.

Ashwin echoes the same observation about Jasprit Bumrah

Former Indian spinner Ravichandran Ashwin has called out Gautam Gambhir’s management for overusing Jasprit Bumrah despite his heavy workload.

The veteran, on his YouTube channel, said Bumrah needs rest and rotation to stay fresh, especially with major tournaments ahead.

“If you want to experiment, then rest Bumrah. Bumrah is the one with workload management issues. You can rest Bumrah. See, Arshdeep Singh is your leading wicket-taker. When we will play the T20 World Cup, there will be some dew," Ashwin said.

Ashwin also said it’s unfair that India’s leading T20I wicket-taker, Arshdeep Singh, isn’t playing despite excelling in global tournaments.

"I really hope there’s no dew because dew is a very dampening factor. But this Arshdeep debate is definitely something that’s very sad because Arshdeep Singh deserves his place," he added.

The third T20I will be played on November 2 at the Hobart Stadium.
