Australian spinner Nathan Lyon has emphasized the immense significance of the World Test Championship (WTC) final, ranking it on par with the Ashes contest. Led by Pat Cummins, the Australian side eagerly awaits their encounters with both India and England, battling it out for a chance to seize two of the most prestigious accolades in Test cricket.

As the Aussies missed securing a spot in the inaugural WTC final, their hunger for redemption is palpable, especially since their last series triumph on English soil dates back to 2001.

Expressing his perspective on the upcoming contests, Lyon underscored the equal magnitude of both assignments. He acknowledged the prestigious nature of the Ashes but emphasized that the forthcoming showdown is akin to a grand final, marking the commencement of their new season. The veteran spinner also conveyed his satisfaction with the team's meticulous planning, enabling them to discern the challenges that lie ahead.

"Yes, we are playing the Ashes but we've got a big game that we're up for. This is our grand final, and then our season basically starts again. That's probably where we're quite happy with where we're at with our planning. We are able to understand what we've got around the corner, and be OK," said Lyon.

Reflecting on the recent Border-Gavaskar Trophy in the subcontinent, where India emerged victorious with a 2-1 scoreline, Lyon further asserted that the upcoming WTC Final will witness a fresh start for both teams. Regardless of the outcome in India, Lyon conveyed his excitement for the pinnacle clash and the electric atmosphere surrounding it, labelling it an immensely cherished event.

He urged Australian fans to embrace the magnitude of the occasion and not only anticipate the Ashes but also exude enthusiasm for the impending clash. The 35-year-old went on to urge everyone to disregard the past events in India and approach the WTC final with a clean slate.

"It's exciting to be part of the final and the fanfare and stuff around it, it's bloody special. I know every Australian fan is looking forward to the Ashes, and so they should be. But they should also be excited about this match. You can wipe off anything that happened in India,” concluded Lyon.

The World Test Championship finale takes place on June 7 at the iconic Oval Stadium in London.
