India have been a dominant force in the Test series at home and they rarely lost a Test match at home in the last 12 years before the New Zealand series. However, the Kiwis changed the story completely in the three-match Test series and have whitewashed India. It is India's first whitewash at home since 2000 and New Zealand have created history with three consecutive Test wins on Indian soil.
On the third day of the final Test at Wankhede, India needed 147 to win after Jadeja got New Zealand's final wicket on the very first ball of the over. Indian batters though struggled from the onset and were reduced to 29-5. It was only Rishabh Pant who kept India in the game with his counter-attacking knock. However, his dismissal on 64 in the 22nd over ended India's hopes. It was a tough decision to swallow as Indians felt that there was no conclusive whether the ball was hitting the pad or bat first, but the umpire was confident and overturned the on-field decision.
Rohit Sharma Asks For Consistency In Decision Making
Rohit Sharma in his press conference after the match also talked about Pant's dismissal and said that if there is no conclusive evidence, third umpire cannot overturn it. He added that umpire decisions should be consistent and his wicket cost India big time as they once thought that the wicketkeeper batter will take India over the line.
"What I know if there is no conclusive evidence, third umpire can't overturn it. It was an unfortunate dismissal. What we want is consistency from umpires. At one point, it felt like Rishabh will see us through."
India lost the Test match by 25 runs and their qualification for WTC final is in serious danger now with a tough tour of Australia coming ahead.
