Who would have thought that a New Zealand side who just lost a one-sided Test series Vs Sri Lanka will inflict a 3-0 whitewash to the Indian side and that too in their own backyard. A series win for India was on the cards, but a Kane Williamson less Kiwis sprung a surprise and clinched the series in a one-sided fashion.

The visitors knocked over India for a paltry 46 in the first Test in Bengaluru and won the match convincingly. It was followed by a spin masterclass by Mitch Santner in Pune as he picked up 13 wickets in the Test match to seal the series for the Black Caps.

The final nail in the coffin was the Mumbai Test, where Ajaz Patel ran riot and dismantled the Indian team to win the match for his side as India were whitewashed. In the process, Rohit Sharma became just the second India Test skipper to get whitewashed at home.

Apart from the match, India also faced consequences in the WTC points table. After 3 losses in a row, they have slipped below Australia to the number 2 slot, with a percentage of 58.33.

India's Australia challenge toughens even more

The importance of India's tour of Australia triples with the added pressure of qualifying for the WTC finals. India now need to win 4 Tests Down Under to secure a place in the finals.

Winning 3 Tests will also work, but only if the other contenders like South Africa lose their next Test series against Pakistan at home. However, winning 4 against the Aussies won't be an easy task, but the Indian team has won the last two Test series Down Under, and will be aiming for a hat-trick this time around.
