Heading into the all-important ICC T20 World Cup 2024, India were faced with top-order conundrums, which the management resolved by opting to field captain Rohit Sharma, and former skipper Virat Kohli as opening pair.

Given the vast experience behind both veterans of Indian cricket, the move has so far yielded poor returns, with Kohli and Sharma adding just 35 ( 22,12 &1) runs as a pair in three matches, which has invited calls from experts to drop the former down one slot, a demand that former West Indies captain Brian Lara disagrees with.

Speaking to Star Sports, Lara opined that Team India should stick with Rohit and Kohli and that the duo will come good sooner or later. The conditions on offer at New York have been bowler-friendly, where batters, who rely on strokeplay have struggled to find their footing.

India has to back the two of them - Brian Lara

"I believe that the combination India is having and India has to back the two of them. At some point in time, they’re going to come good with conditions, the batting conditions in the USA were not the very best. I don’t believe you start making changes especially if you’re winning,”

The 55-year-old, however, did give into the idea of having Kohli bat at No.3 and not below that, given how successful the Indian maestro is in that slot.

Given that India have qualified for the Super 8s, the think tank might be tempted to hand Yashasvi Jaiswal an outing in their final Group A match against Canada on June 15.
