West Indies' spinner Gudakesh Motie created history after the International Cricket Council (ICC) awarded the bowler Men's Player of the Month award for May 2024.

Thus, Motie became only the second player from West Indies to clinch the award after pacer Shamar Joseph won the coveted recognition in January for his exemplary show in Tests against Australia. Motie beat fellow nominees - Pakistan's Shaheen Shah Afridi and Ireland's Lorcan Tucker.

In the contest window, Motie rattled South African batter last month, clinching eight wickets from three T20Is in Windies, which helped the home side complete a 3-0 clean sweep. The left-arm spinner picked three wickets in the first and second encounter, respectively.

As per ICC, the 29-year-old expressed delight over winning the award, which is a result of his hard work in the field.

Very happy to win this award - Gudakesh Motie

“It means a lot to me and I am very happy to win this award. It’s very encouraging, I have put in a lot of work during this season and I am happy that I am seeing the rewards now. The standout performance for me during the series against South Africa was the first game, where I took three for 25. The third wicket that night was my favourite."

Motie has continued his brilliant form in the ongoing ICC T20 World Cup 2024 for West Indies, claiming 5 wickets in three matches, including match-winning spell against New Zealand last evening.

West Indies have already qualified for the Super 8s, having won all their three Group C games thus far, and will play against Afghanistan on June 18.
