In an unexpected moment that sparked curiosity among fans, Yash Vagadia, an Indian-origin player, briefly took the field on Day 3 for England during India’s second innings of the ongoing Headingley Test. The youngster was seen fielding in place of skipper Ben Stokes, who had stepped off temporarily.

Vagadia’s sudden presence in the England whites, despite not being in the England's squad, quickly caught the attention of viewers and social media alike, prompting many to wonder about his background and how he ended up on the field against India.

Who is Yash Vagadia?

Yash Vagadia, 21, is a promising top-order batter and occasional off-spinner who represents Yorkshire County Cricket Club. Born in Newcastle, Vagadia signed a rookie contract with Yorkshire ahead of the 2023 summer after impressive performances for Durham University, where he is currently studying biology and chemistry.

The right-hander first represented Yorkshire at Under 14s level and has progressed through the age-groups and Academy. He captained the county’s Under 18s/ Academy team and helped the second team win the Championship title back in 2022 as mentioned by YorkshireCCC.

He made his List A debut in August 2024 against Warwickshire at Rugby and has featured in a total of two senior matches in his career so far. Although yet to make his first-class debut, he has been a regular presence in Yorkshire’s Second XI fixtures.

How Did Yash Vagadia End Up Fielding for England?

Yash Vagadia, a rising star for Yorkshire County Cricket Club, was named as one of three club players assigned 12th man duties for England in the first Test against India at Headingley, Leeds which allowed him to take the field for England in place of Ben Stokes despite not being named in England's squad. 

Yorkshire CCC shared the update via Instagram, with the club proudly hosting the match. Notably, this is not Vagadia first time doing international duties as he was also seen doing 12th man duties for England back during the 2023 Ashes Test at the same venue, showcasing his growing presence around top-level cricket.
