Former Indian star opener Gautam Gambhir has addressed the speculation surrounding his potential appointment as Team India's next head coach. With current head coach Rahul Dravid set to step down after the T20 World Cup 2024, Gambhir's name has surfaced as a strong contender for the prestigious role.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is actively searching for Dravid's successor. Gambhir’s recent success as the mentor of the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 has bolstered his candidacy.

Under his guidance, KKR clinched the IPL title, marking a unique achievement for Gambhir, who has now won the IPL both as a player and as a mentor.

In a recent interview at an event in Abu Dhabi on Saturday, Gambhir expressed his enthusiasm about the possibility of coaching the national team.

Gambhir opens up on coaching India

"I would love to coach the Indian team. There is no bigger honour than coaching your national team. You are representing 140 crore Indians and those across the globe as well." he said.

“It is 140 crore Indians who will help India win the World Cup. If everyone starts praying for us and we start playing and representing them, India will win the World Cup. The most important thing is to be fearless," he further added.

Gambhir's coaching journey began with the Lucknow Super Giants, where he served as a member of the coaching staff in 2022 before transitioning to his current role with KKR. His ability to lead and inspire players has been evident, making him a viable candidate for the head coach position.

As the T20 World Cup 2024 approaches, it will mark the final assignment for Rahul Dravid as head coach. The BCCI has yet to announce who will succeed the Indian legend, but Gambhir’s name remains a prominent one in the discussions.
