Former Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) coach Tom Moody minced no words in his assessment of India’s recently-announced World Cup 2023 squad. A two-time World Cup winner himself, the legendary Australian believes that Suryakumar Yadav should consider himself lucky to be included in India’s 15-player line-up.

Yadav, one of the best in the world in the game’s T20I arena, is yet to set the ODI stage ablaze with his batting. The 32-year-old holds a moderate average of 24 even after having featured in 26 ODIs since his international debut.

Tom Moody questions SKY's World Cup inclusion

Indian captain Rohit Sharma and BCCI chief selector Ajit Agarkar unveiled the team’s 15-player squad for the upcoming World Cup 2023. Suryakumar Yadav made a cut into the line-up, despite his poor string of scores in the format.

Moreover, his ODI average took a major hit during India’s home series against Australia earlier this year. The Mumbai Indians star returned with three successive first-ball ducks in all three matches and also failed to make much impact in the team’s ODI series in the Caribbean last month.

Former Australian cricketer Tom Moody believes Suryakumar Yadav should not have been even considered for India’s World Cup 2023 squad, and the Indian T20I veteran should feel “very lucky” for his surprise inclusion.

"Suryakumar Yadav should consider himself very lucky to be picked up in the World Cup squad," Moody said.

Last week, while speaking on the Star Sports network, Tom Moody also excluded Suryakumar Yadav from his own World Cup 2023 squad for the Indian team. The former Australian batter picked an additional spinner in the form of Yuzvendra Chahal instead, who ended up being overlooked by the selection committee in favour of Yadav.
