Gautam Gambhir & Mohammad Kaif Engage In A Heated Debate Over Kishan-KL Rahul

As we approach closer to the upcoming ODI World Cup, the debate over the first-choice wicketkeeper for India seems to be gathering a lot of buzz. Ishan Kishan and KL Rahul are two viable wicketkeeper-batsman options that India have in the absence of Rishab Pant. Ishan Kishan hogged the limelight during India’s first Asia Cup encounter against Pakistan last Saturday. He came in to bat when India were in a spot of bother and scored a gritty knock of 82(81) to bail his side out of trouble.

On the other hand, KL Rahul has been out of action for a very long time since the IPL. However, he is expected to be picked ahead of the Super 4 leg of the Asia Cup 2023. In an ongoing debate between two former Indian cricketers, Gautam Gambhir and Mohammad Kaif were embroiled in an intense debate over who would be India’s first-choice wicketkeeper ahead of the ODI World Cup.

KL Rahul vs Ishan Kishan: Kaif & Gambhir's Heated Debate

Kaif was of the opinion that KL Rahul’s exclusion from the team was not due to bad form but due to an injury and firmly advocated his spot in the team.

“KL Rahul is a proven match-winner. At No. 5, his numbers are fabulous. So Rahul Dravid knows, there is that clarity in his mind that…remember, Mohammed Shami was dropped today. So, when KL Rahul is fit again, he will be playing in the XI and Ishan Kishan will have to wait for his next opportunity.”

Gambhir presented his counterargument by suggesting that big names don't win you matches. He further stressed that the players should be considered based on their current form and as per his opinion, Ishan Kishan seems to be ticking all the boxes.

“Had Kohli or Rohit made those four consecutive fifties, would you have said the same thing about KL Rahul? When you are preparing to win a World Cup, you don’t look at a name, you look at the form of a player that could win you the trophy.”

While both personalities put forward valid points, it remains to be seen who will ultimately qualify as the frontline wicket-keeper batter for the Indian side in the upcoming World Cup.
