Washington Sundar picked up four New Zealand wickets on Day 1 of the third Test at Mumbai’s Wankhede Stadium. Accounting for the prized-scalps of Tom Latham, Rachin Ravindra and Daryl Mitchell; Sundar also sent down five no-balls during his uncharacteristically expensive spell, considering the young off-spinner leaked runs at 4.33 an over.
Sundar’s no-ball spree on the opening day of the final Test even prompted on-air commentator Ravi Shastri to come up with a hilarious one-liner. Targeting the Indian spinner, Shastri’s harmless joke was also aimed at former Indian cricketer Sunil Gavaskar.
Ravi Shastri jokes about Washington Sundar’s no-balls
Ravi Shastri was at his wittiest best while commentating during the opening day of India’s Wankhede Test match against New Zealand.
Amidst Washington Sundar’s no-ball spree against the visitors, Shastri trolled the Indian spinner by coming up with a hilarious joke that also targeted fellow commentator and ex-cricketer Sunil Gavaskar. Shastri said:
“Thank god Gavaskar is not fielding in slips otherwise Washington would have been close to Washington DC.”
As it panned out, New Zealand accrued 235 in the first innings on Day 1 after winning the toss and opting to bat first. Will Young and Daryl Mitchell listed fighting half-centuries in the middle order after the loss of early wickets.
For India, Washington Sundar picked up four wickets at an expense of 81 runs in 18.4 overs. Ravindra Jadeja bagged five wickets of his own to pick up figures of 5-65.
Up against New Zealand’s 235, Team India lost captain and opening batter Rohit Sharma for just a run-a-ball 18. While Yashasvi Jaiswal and Shubman Gill stabilised the Indian innings to some extent, three wickets in the space of the final 11 balls of the day tilted the tide back in New Zealand’s favour by stumps. The hosts will now resume their first innings at 86-4 on Day 2.
