Chamari Athapaththu walloped Adelaide Strikers Women spinner Amanda-Jade Wellington for a huge six onto her leg side during the fifth over of the Sydney Thunder innings. As the ball was hurling towards the grass banks, an Australian fan present at the stadium completed a clean catch and showed off his fielding skills by striking a pose in front of the cameras.
The six marked one of the two big hits belted by Chamari Athapaththu during her top-order cameo of 17 runs. She shared 54 runs for the opening wicket with partner and half-centurion Georgia Voll in just 5.1 overs.
The Sydney Thunder Women went on to mount 212-5 from 20 overs courtesy of Georgia’s 55-ball 92, and a sizzling 31-ball 49 from captain Phoebe Litchfield. Heather Knight at number four also smacked 28 swift runs from just 15 balls with three boundaries and two sixes.
For the Adelaide Strikers, Irish pacer Orla Prendergast picked up three of the five fallen wickets at an expense of 35 runs from her four overs.
In response, the Strikers were folded up for just 148 in 19.2 overs to fall 64 runs short of their target. Sam Bates (4-21) and Shabnim Ismail (3-18) collectively claimed seven wickets between them, while Chamari Athapaththu, Hannah Darlington and Sammy-Jo Johnson chipped in with a wicket each.
