Former Indian cricketer Sunil Gavaskar recently slammed Pakistan after tensions flared between the two countries over the deadly terrorist attack in India’s Pahalgam, leaving 26 dead. Gavaskar made a controversial remark, indicating that the Pakistan team is unlikely to take part in the upcoming 2025 T20 Asia Cup in India later this year.
As one can expect, Gavaskar’s comments did not sit down well with several former Pakistan cricketers, including Javed Miandad and Iqbal Qasim. While Miandad and Qasim took a diplomatic stance in their response, former middle-order batter Basit Ali launched a scathing attack on the legendary Indian cricketer.
Basit Ali calls Gavaskar “stupid” for anti-PAK remarks
Basit Ali called Sunil Gavaskar “stupid” for his anti-Pakistan remarks over last month’s deadly terrorist attacks in the Pahalgam town of Kashmir, India. Ali also added that Gavaskar should refrain from making such statements and let investigations run their course first. He said:
“Let the investigation conclude. Cricket should remain above political hostilities.”
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is already barred from playing bilateral series with Pakistan by the Indian government. As of now, the two arch-rivals only go up against each other in multi-nation events like World Cup, T20 World Cup, Champions Trophy and Asia Cup.
It remains to be seen if BCCI will entertain Pakistan in India later this year for the 2025 Asia Cup, as well as in the 2026 T20 World Cup in India. Several rumors are indicating that the Indian government might employ a complete cricketing boycott of Pakistan within the coming months. However, no official statement has been released by either of the two boards.
