Five-time World Cup champions Australia finally opened their account in the ongoing World Cup 2023 with a massive win over Sri Lanka after incurring two consecutive losses that caused them to reconsider their plans going forward. However, coming back strong in this game, the Aussies bowled out Lankans for 209, thanks to valuable effort from leg-spinner Adam Zampa.

Zampa, who bowled eight overs in the game, picked up four wickets for just 47 runs as he accounted for dismissals of skipper Kusal Mendis, Sadeera Samarawickrama, Chamika Karunaratne and Maheesh Theekshana. Following his magical performance, the Aussies chased the target of 210 with more than 14 overs to spare.

Speaking in the post-match presentation, the leg-spinner admitted that he has been struggling with back spasms for the past few days, which caused him great trouble.

"To be honest, not great. I have been sporting some back spasms for a few days. I just tried to get through this match. But happy to get four wickets and contribute,"

However, he turned the mood right by quipping that he couldn't get a fifer because of his captain, who removed him from the attack to bowl an off-spinner in front of a left-hander.

"I think it was the captain's decision to bowl a right-arm off-break bowler against a left-handed batter. So, I couldn't get a chance to pick up a fifer (laughs),"

The 31-year-old further added that he wasn't satisfied with his performance previously because he was unable to fulfil the role of scalping wickets in the middle phase of the game. However, from now onwards, he would ensure that dismissing batters is his priority rather than saving runs.

Additionally, Zampa reckoned that their next game against Pakistan is going to be a tough nut to crack, considering they are a strong side.

"I haven't been bowling at my best. I feel like I have to be doing better, and I have been critical of myself. It took me a lot of time to get into the contest. As I said before, haven't been at my best. But I tried to keep the attitude of picking wickets, doesn’t matter if I leak some runs. Same role next game. We have got a good game next. We face Pakistan in Bengaluru, and that will be a tough game. But just trying to do things right."

After this satisfying victory, Australia will be playing against Pakistan in Bengaluru on 20th October in their fourth group-stage game of the tournament.
