In the game, which turned out to be the biggest setback to English cricket in their World Cup history, they were completely outplayed by the Afghanistan side in Delhi as spin dominated them after Rahmanullah Gurbaz's blistering start to the innings. England were left to resort as they were bowled out for just 215, 69 short of their target of 284 in the World Cup 2023 clash.

After the defining loss, English skipper Jos Buttler was visibly emotional and quite stunned after this effort, reckoning to be a disappointing effort with both bat and ball. Adding that, his wicket was the point that took the match away from them.

"Disappointing to win the toss and concede that many, me missing that first ball down the leg side set the tone. Credit to Afghanistan, they outplayed us today. It came down to execution, we weren’t quite at the level we’d like to be with both bat and ball."

Also, Buttler mentioned that not having dew played a significant part in their loss as they expected the ball and pitch to help them more during the second half, however, conditions were different.

"They have some fantastic bowlers, the dew didn’t come in as much as we expected, the ball held up a bit too. They bowled dead straight and kept the stumps in play, we just weren’t quite good enough."

In the end, Jos conceded his side's tragic loss, where he reckoned that these kind of defeats should hurt as there is no point in moving on before they have a deep introspection on the matter. He was further hopeful that his side would come back stronger for the upcoming games, where they would be playing an aggressive brand of cricket and be able to deal with pressure.

"You got to let these defeats hurt, there’s no point in getting over things too quickly, we need to reflect. There’s a lot of character in this group, we need to show a lot of resilience and come back stronger. We need to have guys being able to perform under pressure, and that’s what all of us will be working hard towards."

England, after this loss, will be aiming to earn two crucial points against South Africa on 21st October in Mumbai's Wankhede Stadium.
