Australian opening batsman Usman Khawaja has won the ICC Test Cricketer of the Year award for his splendid run throughout the year 2023. The left-handed batter finished the 12-month 2023 period as its highest run-getter, leading second-placed Steve Smith by nearly 300 runs.

Remarkably, Khawaja defeated fellow nominees Travis Head, Ravichandran Ashwin, and Joe Root to bag the prestigious honor at the annual ICC event.

Usman Khawaja wins big at ICC Awards 2023

Usman Khawaja was adjudged as the ICC Test Cricketer of the Year by the ICC Voting Academy on January 25. The Australian opening batsman was favored over the likes of his WTC 2023 winning teammate Travis Head, veteran Indian all-rounder Ravichandran Ashwin, and English batting legend Joe Root.

Usman Khawaja tallied 1,210 runs from just 24 innings spanning 13 Test matches at an average of 52.60. The cricketer listed six half-centuries and three tons in the process, which also included a career-best score of 195* against South Africa at the Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG) back in January 2023.

Khawaja was also a part of the Australian team that trounced Team India by 209 runs at the 2023 WTC Final at The Oval in June.

Meanwhile, fellow nominees Travis Head and Joe Root both maintained an astonishing average of over 75 during their run-scoring spree in the year 2023. While Head pounded 919 runs in just 23 innings, which included a match-winning 163 at the WTC final, Root listed 787 runs in just 14 innings, with two tons and five half-centuries to his name.

Ravichandran Ashwin, on the other hand, collected 41 wickets from just seven matches and also contributed with the bat by scoring 150 runs.
