Chennai Super Kings (CSK) star Tushar Deshpande achieved a significant first-class history for Mumbai with fellow tail-ender Tanush Kotian during their Ranji Trophy 2024 quarterfinal bout against Baroda.

Turning up for their side at the Bandra Kurla Complex and batting at numbers 10 and 11, the two cricketers shared 232 runs for the tenth wicket. Deshpande and Tanush cracked their maiden first-class centuries in the process, becoming the first number 10 and 11 pair to list their respective hundreds together in a single first-class innings in nearly 78 years.

Tushar Deshpande attains huge record before IPL 2024

Tanush Kotian, batting at number 10 for Mumbai in their quarterfinal clash against Baroda, formed forces with fellow tailender Tushar Deshpande after his team slumped to 337-9 in their second innings.

As it turned out, Baroda bowlers had to wait for another 40 overs to bag their final wicket as both Kotian and Deshpande shared a record-shattering 232-run partnership. Both cricketers listed their maiden first-class centuries in the process, with Kotian concluding his knock with an unbeaten 120 to his name.

Their batting marathon marked only the second instance in first-class history and the first in nearly 78 years where both number 10 and 11 batters scored their respective centuries in a single innings together.

In 1946, Chandu Sarwate and Shute Banerjee pounded their respective centuries together while batting at number 10 and 11 during a first-class match between Indians and Surrey.

Moreover, Deshpande also attained a new personal high through his 123-run knock against Baroda in the 2024 quarterfinals.

His innings now marks the highest-ever score by a number 11 batter in Ranji Trophy history, besting Tamil Nadu's V Sivaramakrishnan (115 vs Delhi in 2011) in the process.

Deshpande is currently slated to represent the CSK franchise in the upcoming IPL 2024 season. He was retained by the CSK management back in November 2023 on IPL auction day.
