Following India's triumphant victory in the T20 World Cup 2024, the world was stunned by the concurrent announcements of retirement from T20I cricket by Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma.

While Kohli made his announcement shortly after the final match, Rohit Sharma revealed his decision during the official post-match press conference, marking the end of an era for Indian cricket.

Amid the jubilant celebrations that swept the nation after an 11-year ICC title drought was broken, the focus quickly shifted to the unexpected retirements of two stalwarts.

Suryakumar Yadav shed light on the dressing room's attempt to persuade both players to reconsider their decisions, particularly with the T20 World Cup 2026 slated to be held in India in just two years' time.

It is very difficult to leave the game: Surya

“I think it is very difficult to leave the game at such moments. But it is a big thing. It is good that they are leaving this format at such a high. Although when they were in the dressing room, we were saying the same thing, that we still have 1.5 years, after 2 years the World Cup is in India only. Everyone was standing around saying that don't talk about this, we'll see next year. But they both had made up their minds. It was already made up and I think no better moment,” said Suryakumar Yadav in an interview.

Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma, having scripted numerous milestones and victories for the Indian team, chose to bow out on a high note, as the highest run-scorers in T20I history.

Their decision, while unexpected, marks a significant transition for Indian cricket, prompting reflections on their unparalleled contributions and the legacy they leave behind.
