'Should Be A 3-Match Series': Nathan Lyon Speaks In The Tunes Of Rohit And Warner For The WTC Final

Australia's star spinner Nathan Lyon has dropped a unique suggestion for the International Cricket Council (ICC) and has urged the top governing body to make the WTC final a three-match series to justify its two-year cycle.

“One thing I would like to see, I'd like to see the World Test Championship Final potentially in a three-match series. That may become a little bit better because you potentially can lose using a Test match in one session where [in a three-match series] it may allow teams to bounce back all your show their dominance and win 3-0. We're pretty time-poor anyway and that will be a challenge but that's one thing I would change," remarked Lyon while speaking to ICC.

“You potentially could go one in England, one in India, one in Australia, so you have all different conditions, but obviously, the timing of that changes everything. I don't think we're going to get on the MCG in the middle of August, just putting it out there," he added.

Lyon, who won the WTC title with Australia in 2023, praised the two-year cycle introduced by the ICC as it require teams to be consistent. He said:

“It's not tournament play. You can't just be scraping into the semi-finals and losing two games or what not. You've got to be consistent over the two years of the cycle."

Lyon's Performance In WTC History

It is worth noting that Lyon is the leading wicket-taker in the history of WTC. The right-arm spinner has 187 wickets in 43 matches and also holds the record for most wickets in a single edition of WTC edition (88 in WTC 2021-23 Cycle)

Other Players Too Advocate For Three-Match Series

Nathan Lyon is not the first cricketer to raise his voice for a three-match series to decide the WTC winner. Earlier, Indian skipper Rohit Sharma and Australia's talisman David Warner have also suggested the same to the ICC.

Rohit had suggested the same after India's defeat against Australia in the WTC 2023 final and he requested for the changed to happen for the next cycle. However, ICC did not pay any heed to such suggestions and still continue with one-match final.

Lord's To Host The WTC 2023-25 Cycle Final

On Tuesday, September 3, ICC confirmed that the mecca of cricket, the Lord's will host the WTC final for the first time in history. The mega-red ball event will take place from June 11-16, with a reserve day kept in mind.
