Following India’s loss to Australia in the recently concluded final of the World Test Championship at the Oval, Indian captain Rohit Sharma shared his opinion on the possible changes he would like to see in the format of WTC Final in future.

The 36-year-old suggested having a best-of-three final in the next cycle. Previously, Virat Kohli also contradicted the current format of WTC Final to decide the winner of the 2-year long tournament.

Australia defeated India by 209 runs early on Day 5 of the WTC final, with India falling behind once again to win an ICC trophy. This was India’s second consecutive loss in the WTC Final in two years, and of course once again in England. But was the one-match final fair enough to decide the winner of such a 2-year long tournament?

Sharma suggests changes in WTC Final format

According to many, including the Indian captain, a major tournament final like the World Test Championship Final should not be decided with just one game. Sharma expressed his wish to see a change in the format into best-of-three final in the next cycle.

“I would prefer a best-of-three final for the World Test Championship as it would be ideal to compete over 3 Tests after all the hard work, over 2 years, in reaching the final. It would be ideal if there are 3 Tests in the next cycle,” Sharma said at the post-match press conference.

This was the second edition of the WTC Final and both the finals were played in England during the month of June. However, Sharma further added that a global tournament final like this should be hosted at different venues across the world and not only in England.

"June is not the only month to play the WTC Final. It could be played anywhere in the world, not just in England," Sharma added.

Team India will be back in action after a month-long break in July away from home against the West Indies. There is a good chance to see some major changes in the squad during the two-match test series against West Indies which will mark team India’s campaign in the next WTC cycle.
