Day 1 of the second Test between England and India at Edgbaston saw a dramatic morning session, especially for England pacer Chris Woakes, who had two very close LBW appeals turned down, both on the umpire's call. In a moment of frustration, he was caught swearing on  stump mic.

The first moment came when Woakes trapped the in-form Yashasvi Jaiswal in front. The appeal looked strong, but the umpire ruled it not out.

England reviewed it, and ball-tracking showed it was just clipping the stumps. Because of the “umpire’s call” rule, the original decision stayed, and Jaiswal survived.

Soon after, Karun Nair also got a big slice of luck. He offered no shot to a ball from Chris Woakes that nipped back sharply.

Again, England appealed for LBW, and again it was turned down. The review showed the ball barely touching the stumps, umpire’s call once more.

Woakes was clearly furious. As he turned and walked back to his mark, clearly fuming, he was caught on the big screen muttering, “That’s a f*****g joke,” according to ESPN Cricinfo.

Woakes is known as one of cricket’s nicest players, but even he couldn’t hide his frustration after being denied twice in such close calls.

Meanwhile, Karun Nair took advantage of his luck. He played a couple of beautiful straight drives, especially against Josh Tongue and Woakes, just before the drinks break. Though England bowled well in the first hour, luck wasn’t on their side.

Nair has a big responsibility on his shoulders after twin failures in the first Test at Headingley, Leeds. He has been promoted to no. 3, while skipper Shubman Gill will walk at no. 4.
