The Global T20 Canada tournament was marred by controversy as Bangla Tigers skipper Shakib Al Hasan found himself in the spotlight once again, this time due to a toss-related incident during the Eliminator clash against Toronto Nationals

The controversy erupted when rain disrupted the match in Brampton, leading to a decision to proceed with a Super Over to decide the outcome.

Bangla Tigers owner Zafir Yasin shed light on the incident, revealing that the other team’s owner had gone to great lengths to ensure the match continued, even purchasing covers worth $20,000 to protect the pitch.

"One day before the match, the other owner bought covers worth $20,000 and he had some people in the field making sure everything was right,"  Yasin said in an interview with Cricket.com.

He suggested that these factors influenced the decision-making process on the match day.

As the cut-off time approached, officials communicated to both teams that a Super Over would be played, as per the tournament's playing regulations.

However, Shakib Al Hasan protested, questioning why a five-over match couldn’t be conducted instead, as per ICC rules.

"On the match day, when the two captains were called for the toss, Shakib [Al Hasan] went to the umpire’s office. Shakib asked the umpires why a five-over match can’t be done because that’s what the ICC rulebook says. This is when the umpires responded saying that a five-over match can’t be done because it’s risky but a one-over match can be done because it carries much less risk," he added.

In protest, Shakib refused to participate in the toss for the Super Over, leading to the Bangla Tigers forfeiting the match.

The ace all-rounder, known for his animated nature and frequent headlines, caught the spotlight again as his decision sparked debate, highlighting the complexities and controversies that can arise in franchise cricket.

He will be seen in action in the two-match Test series against Pakistan. However, it has also been confirmed that he will be available for all remaining Tests in 2024, including those for Bangladesh.
