'He Is A Bit Like Gambhir': Ricky Ponting Makes A Huge Claim On Pakistan's Head Coach

Former Australian captain Ricky Ponting has expressed confidence in Pakistan's new red-ball coach, Jason Gillespie, stating that the former fast bowler will be a valuable addition to the team. 

Ponting, who shares a close bond with Jason Gillespie from their time playing together for Australia, believes that Gillespie's coaching style will benefit the Pakistan team.

During a conversation on the ICC Review, Ponting highlighted Gillespie's successful coaching career, comparing him to India's newly appointed head coach, Gautam Gambhir.

"Jason Gillespie is a bit like Gambhir. Pretty much everywhere he has been, his coaching record has been very very good. He will have some challenges I got no doubt about it. But he is a deep thinker and as I said, a quiet person that goes about it in his own way,"  Ponting said.

Gillespie, who was appointed as Pakistan's red-ball head coach in April 2024, has prior coaching experience with the IPL franchise Punjab Kings and the Big Bash League team Adelaide Strikers. 

His first assignment as Pakistan's head coach will be the upcoming two-match Test series against Bangladesh, starting on August 21.

Meanwhile, Gautam Gambhir, in his initial assignment as India's head coach, led the team to a T20I series whitewash against Sri Lanka but faced a disappointing series defeat in the ODIs.
