Young batting sensation Shubman Gill made a stunning comeback to form with a majestic and timely century in India’s second innings on Day 3 of the ongoing second Test against England at the YS Rajasekhara Reddy ACA-VDCA Cricket Stadium in Vizag on Sunday, February 04. Among the many who lauded Gill’s special knock was his teammate Yuzvendra Chahal, who hailed the Indian batter for the exceptional innings.

Having faced criticism for his recent struggles in Tests, Gill showed his class once again with a remarkable innings, silencing his critics.

India had a horrible start to day 3 with the quick dismissals of both openers in the morning session , resuming their second innings at 29/0. While Rohit Sharma departed without adding to his overnight score, Yashasvi Jaiswal contributed only 2 runs before falling to James Anderson at 17. Gill entered the fray after James Anderson removed Indian skipper Rohit Sharma early on Day 3. Forming a partnership with no.4 Shreyas Iyer, Gill played a pivotal role in India's recovery, as the duo shared a crucial 81-run stand for the third wicket.

Gill swiftly reached his half-century in just 60 balls, breaking his streak of poor scores. However, on the other hand, Iyer fell short after scoring 29, failing to convert his promising start into a substantial score once again. The quick dismissals of Iyer and debutant Rajat Patidar exposed Axar Patel at the crease.

Despite the setbacks, Gill continued to counter-attack and achieved a century after lunch, reaching the milestone in just 132 balls. He forged a fifty-plus run partnership with Axar Patel.

Gill's remarkable innings marked the end of his struggles in Test cricket. The right-handed top-order batsman had not surpassed the 50-run mark in whites since his 128 against Australia in the Ahmedabad Test last year. His scores in the twelve innings preceding this century were 13, 18, 6, 10, 29*, 2, 26, 36, 10, 23, 0, and 34.

Unfortunately, Ben Stokes' clever tactics brought an end to Gill's special innings at 104, inducing the young batter to play an unorthodox shot, resulting in a catch to Ben Foakes.

Gill's second century at home significantly contributed to India's extension of their second-inning lead. The team now leads by over 350 runs after dismissing the three lions for 253 in their first innings.
