Kane Williamson's routine home Test century on Day 1 of the first Test against South Africa helped him jump up the esteemed and elite 'Fab 4' club of modern-day great batters.

The New Zealand stalwart is now the second-highest centurion in Test cricket among the quartet of legends, also including prolific run-getters and unparalleled century makers Steve Smith, Joe Root and Virat Kohli.

As Williamson raised his bat to savour the salutations and applause from the dressing room as well as the decent crowd at the Bay Oval in Mount Maunganui, he managed to pip over India great Kohli's Test century count and matched England veteran Root's tally of hundreds in the longest format.

Williamson Climbs Up In 'Fab 4' Century Count

Williamson had started the Test match levelled with Kohli, who reached his 29th Test century last July and has been in resurgent mode as a batter after undergoing a surprise dip at the Test level during the Covid-19 pandemic.

The classy right-hander not only surpassed his Indian counterpart but also managed to equalise with the former England skipper. Williamson took himself to the second spot, with Aussie giant Smith still holding the numero uno spot with 32 centuries.

Williamson has reached his 30th Test ton in only 97 Tests and 169 innings for the BlackCaps. The 33-year-old has been a formidable batter for the Kiwis, someone their fortunes rest quite largely on as he averages an eye-catching 55.09 for his 8,375 runs.

The century was critical to the in-match context also as New Zealand lost two early wickets and required their former captain and batting giant to rise up to the task. Williamson would've taken immense satisfaction on that front as he once again emerged a hero in adversity for the Kiwis.
