On Sunday, September 28, India scripted history as the Men in Blue defeated Pakistan by five wickets to lift the Asia Cup trophy for the ninth time. Talking about lifting a trophy, the phrase can only be mentioned metaphorically because the Suryakumar Yadav-led side were never presented with a trophy.
A lot of drama unfolded after the conclusion of the final, as Team India had clearly refused to take the trophy from ACC chairman Mohsin Naqvi because of his recent anti-India political remarks.
Salman Agha Defends PCB Chairman's Act
Hurt by Team India's decision, Maqvi waited at the presentation podium for a long time, but eventually decided to walk off the ground and also took the trophy alongside him.
The act sent the internet into a frenzy, and the fans quickly slammed Mohsin Naqvi for his cowardly act. Meanwhile, Salman Ali Agha defended the ACC chairman and, most importantly, the PCB chairman Mohsin Naqvi.
Salman, instead, slammed India for bringing political affairs into the Asia Cup, which triggered Pakistan to reciprocate in a similar fashion.
"There are consequences to everything. We have to see who started it. If he (Mohsin Naqvi) is the ACC president, then he will only give the trophy. If you don’t want to take it from him, how will you get a trophy? And you are saying that there was no pre-match press conference, but it was a result of what happened on the ground," remarked Salman Ali Agha.
BCCI looks to file a case against Mohsin Naqvi
Mohsin Naqvi's act didn't go well with the BCCI and secretary Devajit Saikia remarked that the board will file a complaint in regards to the matter. The BCCI is expected to submit a formal protest letter to both the ICC and ACC, demanding the immediate return of the Asia Cup trophy and the players’ medals.
The secreatery also called it 'unsportsmanlike' and 'unfortunate' and confirmed that India will lodge a formal protest at the upcoming ICC conference in November.
