For Abhishek Sharma, the Asia Cup 2025 was a coming-of-age tale, the kind that makes fans sit up and say, “This guy is here to stay.” We have all seen flashes of his talent before but this time the youngster turned promise into power.

Abhishek Sharma thanks Surya and Gambhir for fearless backing

Seven games, 314 runs, and a strike-rate touching 200. That is not batting, that is carnage. And the best part? Abhishek Sharma played without an ounce of fear. No baggage, no stage fright, just pure intent.

He admitted it wasn’t possible without the faith shown in him by captain Suryakumar Yadav and head coach Gautam Gambhir.

“I have never felt that this is a pressure match. We have prepared all the matches equally. Because of the way I have been playing. I felt like Surya bhai and GG ji have given me confidence because when you want to play like this [brand of cricket], you have to go up and down,” Abhishek said after winning the player of the tournament award.

Backing that turned risk into reward

In T20s, you live by the sword and sometimes die by it. Abhishek knows the risks of his ultra-attacking game, but he believes the trust around him made all the difference.

“Obviously, if you want to play at such a high risk, then there are failures. But the way they handled me at that time, the way they [Gambhir and Suryakumar] talked to me at that time, I think because of that, especially to play like this because it is very important, that you have such support with the team.”

That clarity turned his knocks into game-changing blitzes, setting the tempo at the top and paving the way for India’s record ninth Asia Cup title.

A bumpy road to the top

The journey here wasn’t all smooth sailing. Part of India’s U19 World Cup-winning squad in 2018 alongside Shubman Gill, Abhishek took the long road to stardom. His IPL days with Delhi Capitals and domestic stints often looked patchy. But those detours, he believes, were blessings in disguise.

“I have played Under 19 and after that I got a chance. So it was very up and down because [for some players the trajectory is straight while for others, they experience everything] So I felt, I needed that [experiencing everything]. Because as a player, if I came directly, then I would not have got everything to learn. But obviously, I got more time to work than normal. Many players do not get that but I got more.”

Now, that patience is paying off in spades.

Learning from Surya’s calm

While Abhishek thrives on adrenaline, he was quick to point out that Suryakumar Yadav’s calm has rubbed off on him. Watching his skipper’s demeanour, regardless of personal scores, left a mark.

“Since I have joined the team, even when he scores 100, he will still laugh like that, he talks to everyone like that. Even if he is out early, he leads everyone together. So I feel, this is the best quality of his I have seen. I also want to learn this because in T20 especially, you keep going up and down. But you have to make a balance, how to stay with the team, Enjoy everything.”

The player of the tournament summed it up best: “I think this is just the beginning of our team and there is a lot more to come.”

For India, that is music to the ears. For bowlers facing him, it is the sound of trouble on the horizon. With his performance in the Asia Cup 2025, Abhishek Sharma has rewritten India’s T20I template.
